Chapter 4

Home

We order room service and all share a big meal, drinks flowing freely. Holden talks more than I’m used to—Charlotte seems to draw him out in a way that’s sweet to watch. At a certain point while she’s trying to teach him how to tell a dirty joke in French, both of them laughing, Jane catches my eye and I know we’re thinking the same thing: I hope Holden and Charlotte are falling in love.

I suspect they’ve never slept together, which seems odd. He’s almost bashful with her—careful in a way he isn’t with Jane, because… well, Jane doesn’t want that.

When Charlotte leaves after getting a call to meet a friend in the lounge, she and Holden exchange a hug and cheek-kiss goodbye. I don’t think it’s my imagination that Charlotte’s eyes are saying she wants more.

Jane goes to put on a robe over the tank top and satin pajama bottoms she’s been wearing—the evening chill is floating in off the ocean. I’m wandering the living room, tidying up the mess from the food, when I notice Holden has gone to the bedroom after Jane. Assuming they might be up to something sexy, I discreetly peek around the corner.

They’re sitting on the foot of the bed, and Jane has her phone in her hands.

“You know what comes next,” Holden says, his voice kind but grave. He takes the phone and swipes it open, then hands it back. “Delete my number.”

She looks at him, her lips pulling to one side. “Because… you don’t want to talk with me again after I leave?”

He tucks a section of hair behind her ear. “Can I ask you something?”

She looks as surprised as I feel—it might be the first time Holden has asked permission for anything from her.

“Of course.”

“How come you don’t live here in Saint Lucia? You’re rich. You could live here.”

Fuck… is he trying to get her to move? My stomach lurches.

But she understands his question better than I do in my insecurity, and answers the way it was intended.

“Because this isn’t my home,” she replies evenly. “It’s just a vacation.”

“Sure, but... it’s beautiful here, right?”

She nods.

“Is your home ugly?”

A small laugh escapes her. “No, it’s beautiful there too. I love it.”

He gives her a gentle kiss. “You don’t need to take Saint Lucia back to the mainland with you, sweetheart. Just the memory.” He taps her screen. “And you don’t need my number.”

She watches him for a long time, then deletes him from her contacts. They hug.

“It was really nice meeting you, Holden,” she says, her voice a rough whisper.

“You too, Janey.” He gives her a kiss on the forehead and stands, and I whip around the corner and tiptoe back to the bar.

I’m tossing out a handful of cocktail napkins when he’s suddenly beside me. Between two big fingers he’s holding up Jane’s wedding ring, which he sets on the bar.

“Keep taking good care of her,” he tells me with a smile that’s a touch sad. “You’re a great husband, Rob.
